Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej currently Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born 12 November 1961. She was the first Romanian to receive a score of 10 in an Olympic event. Comaneci was discovered by Bela Karolyi who was later her Romanian gymnastics coach at the time she was just six years old. Comaneci participated for the first time in the 1969 national junior championships and finished 13th. The following year she became champion. At her first international competition in 1972, she came out on top by winning three gold awards. Her debut as a senior in 1975 she beat the Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva. The five-time European champion, winning four golds and a silver. She won the American Cup in New York City in 1976 becoming the first woman in history to complete the backward double salto in an unmounting from uneven parallel bars. In her teens she was performing on traveling shows like Ice Capades as a skater along with her younger sibling Nina Wayne. She started her career as a figure skater performing with her sibling Nina Wayne as part of the shows that traveled around known as Ice Capades. These shows were ice skating events with theatrical shows.
